1).

Learning to grow your edges or hairline may seem like a herculean task if you have bad hair practices. I have had sparse edges for as long as I can remember and though it partly runs in my family, I may have contributed in worsening it. Going natural kinda made it more obvious when ever I styled my hair and also made me get weird questions with regards to my hair. I implemented the use of Jamaican Black Castor Oil early this year by massaging it into my scalp and there's obvious improvement as shown in my pictures above.

In order to grow your edges, there are certain things you should take note of include into your hair care regimen.

 1) HAIRSTYLISTS AND HAIRSTYLES

Alot of hairstylists especially here in Nigeria manhandle natural hair. They comb your hair not only while dry but also using a rat tail comb and when you complain they grumble that they are trying to make your hair smooth so that the hairstyle turns out nicely which results in a headache later on and much worse, hair breakage.
Also, most of them make your braids or cornrows too tight at the edges. In turn, this pulls out your hair at these tight spots.
So whenever you go to style your hair, insist your hair is damp, that they do not use a rat tail comb in combing your hair, that your cornrows or braids are never tight and they always leave out your edges if needed.

2) MINDFUL PROTECTIVE STYLING

Most people you ask would swear that protective styling supports hair growth but I beg to differ. Logically, it makes sense that protective styling = less manipulation = length retention but that is not always the case. The ability of your protective style to aid with length retention depends on a number of factors such as:
  • frequency of protective styling
  • Instllation of protective style
  • duration of each protective style
  • type of protective styling
  • hair care while wearing protective style
  • takedown of protective style
reducing how often you wear protective styles such as braids, faux locsandcornrows

3) SCALP MASSAGE

Scalp massage maually stimulates hair follicle by increasing blood flow to the scalp. Incorporating certain oils like rosemary, thyme, amla, etc during scalp massage could also aid hair growth
It usually takes a few weeks before you start seeing resuts. I have been using the deep follicle treatmet from healthy hair studio for about a year now and my edges are slowly catching up.
Kindly note that this particular tip may or  may not work depending on the cause and severity of hair loss.

4) EXCESSIVE USE OF GELS

While edge control gels are great for laying your edges, some of them contain alcohol which dry out the hair and make them prone to breakage. To reduce the risk of hair breakage,
  • opt for alcohol free and moisturising edge control gel when possible,
  •  wash off the gel residue  after a couple of days and
  •  moisturise your edges before re-application.
You could also swap edge control gels for styling creams. Some of them offer soft to medium hold and remove the need for gels with certain hairstyles.

5) MOISTURISE

Water is your best friend when it comes to moisturising your hair. Try as much as possible to drink alot of water and moisturise your edges too. It not only prevents dry brittle hair but also gives your hair shine. You can moisturise using the LOC (Liquid, Oil and Cream) method.

6) TENDER LOVING CARE

You should not neglect your hair. Try as much as possible to give it the care it needs and watch it grow with time.

Have your ever had sparse edges as a result of a hairstylist or style?
